The Lagos State Government through its Ministry of Health has listed its achievements in safe guarding quality of meals consumed by the over 25 million residents of the state.
This is coming just as the state government has assured that it would ensure that the right mechanism it has put in place in the 20 years are well strengthened to ensure public health safety in the state.
These were disclosed by the Director, Environmental Health/Occupational Health and Safety in the ministry, Dr. T. F. Ajayi on the occasion marking the 2021, World Food Safety Day in Lagos.
According to Ajayi, the Babajide Sanwoolu led government is paying premium on its THEMEs agenda in which the issues of Health and Environment play key roles.
Addressing the media on the even with the theme, ‘Today’s Safe Food for a Healthy Tomorrow’, he added that “The aim of the state government at all times is to ensure that everyone has good-quality food to lead a healthy life.”
Listing the effects of consumption of unsafe food, he stated that it induces low productivity, income and other direct and indirect costs not only to the individuals but also to the state at large.
To address the challenges however, Ajayi stated that the state government has overtime put in place mechanism for ensuring that participants in the food chain value imbibe the right practices in the process of supply the item to the people.
Appraising the journey so far, he said, “The State is proud to discuss her existing structure on food safety, through the implementation of the Food Safety Management System (FSMS): Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) for all regulated premises, in which compliance is being strengthened.
“Through activities of the Directorate of Environmental Health/Occupational Health and Safety Services on issuance of HACCP Compliance certificate since 2017. FSMS: HACCP is a food protection system that starts from the farm/manufactures to fork and hence the need to ensure food safety.”
While maintaining that the state government will not lower its guard, Ajayi added “We all have a role to play, in ensuring availability of safe food using best practices; hence the need to imbibe the best food practices at every stage, bearing in mind that food safety is everyone’s business.”
