Tofa, Abiola’s challenger in June 12 poll dies at 73

A former Presidential candidate of the defunct National Republic Convention (NRC) in the 1993 annulled election, Alhaji Bashir Othman Tofa has died at the age of 73.

Family sources told DAILY RIPPLES that the businessman turned politician passed away in the early hours of Monday, January 3, 2022, at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Kano after a brief illness.

Another source who is a close associate, Magaji Galadima (Kachallan Kano), confirmed the development in a Facebook post on Monday.

Mr Galadima wrote: “Allahu akbar, we eventually lost Alh. Bashir Tofa. May Allah grant him eternal rest.”

Tofa contested and lost a presidential election against late Chief Mashood Abiola, an election that was later annulled by General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida.

The politician was rumoured to have died last year but the news of his death was refuted by a family friend who said he was still alive but critically sick.

The business tycoon will be buried today in line with Islamic rites.
