Former President Olusegun Obasanjo alongside a prominent Islamic cleric, Shiek Abubakar Mahmoud Gumi have described the current security challenges facing the country as beyond ‘tolerance level’.
The position forms the outcome of a meeting between Obasanjo who played host to the Kaduna based cleric on Sunday.
At the meeting that took place in Abeokuta hilltop residence of the former president, the two personalities alongside their teams resolved to take some drastic steps to stem the tide of needless bloodletting in the country.
A communique that was subsequently issued at the end of the meeting however called on all Nigerians to forge a collective front with a view to dealing with the monster.
The two resolved that “Solutions must be seen and provided on short-, medium-, and long-term basis and must be composed of stick and carrot for the offender and the vulnerable.”
They also added that “All well-meaning Nigerians have to be involved in finding solutions to the problem in the over all collective well being of all Nigerians.”
In finding a lasting solution to the problem, Obasanjo and Gumi called on all Nigerians to desist from blame game; ethnicising the problem, religionising it as well as regionalising it.
They also urged Nigerians to show some respect for one another individually, community-wise, locally, ethnically, religiously and socially”, as well as show tolerance and accommodation where necessary.
