We didn’t shoot Sowore, say Abuja police

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command of the Nigeria Police Force has denied that any of its officers shot activist and politician, Mr. Omoyele Sowore on Monday.

Sowore who was the presidential candidate of AAC in the last Presidential election had tweeted on Monday morning that personnel of the force shot at him during a peaceful rally at the Unity Fountain in Abuja.

The tweet, which went viral prompted series of reactions from Nigerians at home and abroad questioning the human rights credentials of the current Muhammadu Buhari, All Progressives Congress (APC) led government.

Reacting however, the spokesperson for the command, Mariam Yusuf, in a statement on Monday said contrary to the report, police operatives deployed in the scene professionally restored calm at the protest venue.

The statement titled ‘Police restores calm at the Unity Fountain’ reads, “The FCT Command wishes to debunk the viral message in some sections of the social media purporting that ‘Omoyele Sowore was shot by a female Assistant Commissioner of Police’ at the Unity Fountain.
