Niger governor says kidnapped Kagara students in captivity

Niger Governor Abubakar Sani-Bello has dispelled rumour that students of Government Science College, Kagara and their teachers have been released from captivity.

In all, no fewer than 27 and three teachers of the school were reportedly abducted by gunmen believed to bandits on Wednesday prompting nationwide outrage.

The position of the state government is coming just as rumour mills have been agog suggesting that the pupils and their teachers have been set free after the bandits met with a popular Muslim cleric, Sheik Ahmed Gumi in their (the bandits) in their hideouts on Wednesday.

Gumi had reportedly met with the bandits in their forests between Tegina and Birnin gwari in Kaduna state.

Reacting to the story, Governor Sani-Bello said the government was in last stage of negotiations with the bandits, promising the victims would be released soon.
