Former ECOMOG commander, Joshua Dogonyaro dies at 80

A former commander of the West African intervention force in Liberia, (ECOMOG), Lt. General Joshua Nimyel Dogonyaro (Rtd) has died at the age of 80.

Family sources told DAILY RIPPLES that the former military leader died early this morning in Jos, the Plateau State capital.

Dongoyaro was the officer that heralded and read the coup speech that ended the regime of Nigeria’s current President, General Muhammadu Buhari (Rtd), and brought General Ibrahim Babangida (Rtd) to power on August 27 1985.

Though the circumstances of his death remains unclear as at the time of filing this reports, he died after a brief illness.

The deceased was also a former Chief of Defence Staff and is survived by his wife, Zainab Esther Dogonyaro, and seven children.
