FG orders telcos to shutdown services in Zamfara over insecurity

The Federal Government through the National Communications Commission (NCC) has ordered all telecom operators operating in troubled Zamfara State to shut down their networks.

The order is contained in a letter written to the various service providers on Friday by the Executive Vice Chairman of the Commission, Mr. Umar Garba Danbatta.

Dambatta in one of the letters sighted by DAILY RIPLLES on Saturday stated that the move forms one of the various strategies for combating growing insecurity in the state occasioned by the activities of bandits.

He added also that it was carried out at the request of the leadership of the various security agencies in the country.

“The pervading security situation in Zamfara State has necessitated an immediate shutting down of all telecommunications service in the state from today September 03, 2021.

“This is to enable relevant security agencies carry out required activities towards addressing the security challenge in the state, in line with the requirement, Globacom is hereby directed to shut down all sites in Zamfara State and any site(s) in neighboring state that could provide telecommunications service in Zamfara State.

“The site shutdown is for two weeks (September 03 – 17, 2021) in the first instance. Your urgent action in this regard is required,” a copy of the letter sent to one of the telcos reads.
