APC chieftain seeks removal of Magashi, probe of sacked minister

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State, Abdulmajid Danbilki Kwammanda, on Friday urged President Muhammadu Buhari to sack the Minister of Defence, Major-General Salihi Magashi (rtd.) from office for alleged poor performance in securing the nation.

Kwammanda has been a long-time friend and strong political supporter of Buhari before he won the presidency on the APC platform.

Speaking at a press conference in Kano, Kwammanda, a long-time friend and strong political supporter of Buhari before he won the presidency on the APC platform, said the president was absolutely right to have sacked (former) Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Mohammed Sabo Nanono, for his poor performance.

Nanono and Magashi hail from Kano, but there were jubilations in some parts of Kano when Nanono was booted out by the president, who noted that his contributions, just like sacked minister of Power, Saleh Mamman, were “considered weak and not in tandem with the goal of his administration.”

The APC chieftain added that the sack is not enough; the president should engage the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to thoroughly probe all the activities of the sacked Agric minister while he was in office.

Kwammanda, a former Chairman of The Buhari Campaign Organisation, hinted that he had opposed the ministerial appointments of Nanono and Magashi from day one but Buhari did not listen to him.

He said: “I opposed their appointments and told the president that if he is looking for performance, he should drop their names because they will not perform. I said we, the Kano people, will regret it, because they will not deliver and Nigerians would not be happy with us.

“Today, Nanono has been fired for poor performance; I am vindicated. The president should also sack Magashi now before (it becomes too late) if the president really wants to reinvigorate his cabinet and consolidate his achievements.

“Today, the North where Gen Magashi comes from is near collapse and taken over by bandits, kidnappers, armed robbers and other criminal elements. Or is it not a reality that today, despite huge billions of money spent on defence armoury, one cannot travel peacefully across Nigeria?

“President Muhammadu Buhari is trying marvellously in the area of security of the nation but look at what is happening? Insecurity.

This administration has spent a lot to procure military hardware and other security gadgets, but because the Defence Minister is not up to the task, security challenges are still confronting the nation.
